Parshat Vayikra

By Rabbi Shlomo Zargari

Shalom;

We are starting the book of Vayikra, one law stands out in the Parasha (2, 11&12)

כי כל שאור וכל דבש לא תקטירו ממנו לה׳ . קרבן ראשית תקריבו אתם לה׳.

Don’t bring any leavened or honey as a burnt offering to HaShem. As a first offering, you can bring them ( the Bread offering on Shavuot is leavened and as Bikurim offering we bring dates and figs).

The Rambam( Hilchot Deot 2,2) writes, in every מידה( trait, behavior) one must stay in the middle path and not be extreme. If one finds himself leaning towards any extreme, he should bring himself towards the other extreme until he finds the balance.

This idea , says the שואל ומשיב, is hinted at in our Parasha.

The items we shouldn’t bring as offerings represent the two extremes and opposites . One is bitter and the other sweet. That is why the Torah writes: do not bring this as an offering, because we should stay away from extremes.

However in the beginning, before a person trained himself to go in the correct direction and finds himself in one extreme, the correct course would be to bring himself to the other extreme to balance himself.

Shabbat Shalom
