Parashat Vayera

By Rabbi Aharon Seleh:

In this week’s Parsha, Hashem appeared to Avraham. Suddenly Avraham noticed three Arabs walking down the road. He asked Hashem to please wait as he went to invite these Arabs to his house. Avraham’s action seems puzzling. He is in middle of talking to the Creator, how can he interrupt to go invite some guests? They seemed to be Arabs and they didn’t even plan to stop by him. He chased after them. Here he is about 100 years old, in pain from the Brit Milah. When he reaches them he bows down on the floor and begs to come to his house. How do we understand this? The Gemara derives from here that inviting guests, which is a form of chessed, is even greater then greeting the Shechinah. The reason is simply because the highest mitzvot are ones between man and his fellow. The essence of the entire Torah is to love one another and to help one another.
