By Rabbi Shlomo Zargari:
Shalom, in parashat Eikev, we continue from the previous parasha, where HaShem promised us reward and punishment for those who go or do not go in the ways of HaShem.
One of the pesukim in our parasha says: (7:13)
“ואהבך וברכך והרבך וברך פרי בטנך…”
Meaning, HaShem will love you, bless you, multiply you and bless your children…
The question is asked, how is the Torah promising all these good things to those who are careful in performing the misvot? Did we learn in the Talmud (Kidushin 39b), there’s no reward for misvot in this world?
The answer is, true; all that’s written in our parasha, isn’t a reward for performing the misvot, but a help and assistance so we can accomplish this task to perfection. Imagine a person who asked his friend to go to a distance and pick up something for him; he pays for his gas and all other expenses, otherwise his friend would not be able to make the trip. It’s the same with HaShem’s promises mentioned here: The person who is doing the misvot to perfection will get divine assistance.(HaRambam Hilchot Teshuva chapter 9)
We can also say that all these good rewards for the person who is careful in performing the misvot in the best manner possible are given as a “measure for measure.” Because if he puts in the effort to study the laws so he can know how to carry out the misvot in the best possible manner, it’s a sign that he’s doing this because he loves HaShem. Such individuals, the Torah writes about them: “He will love you,” just like he loves HaShem, HaShem will love him back and will add for him all these blessings besides, the incredible rewards awaiting him in the world to come.
Performing the misvot with precision and alacrity through the knowledge of halachot shows the love for HaShem!
Shabbat Shalom
